Horsepower Guide & Reference
Horsepower Formula
HP = (Torque × RPM) / 5,252
Where Torque is in foot-pounds and RPM is revolutions per minute.
The constant 5,252 = (33,000 ft·lbf/min) / (2π)

In Metric: Power (W) = Torque (N·m) × RPM / 9.5488
HP = (Torque N·m × RPM) / 7,121
The 4 Types of Horsepower
Mechanical HP hp(I): 550 ft·lbf/s = 745.70 W — most common, used for vehicle engines
Metric HP hp(M): 75 kgf·m/s = 735.50 W — used in Europe for vehicle ratings
Electrical HP hp(E): 746 W exactly — used for electric motors
Boiler HP hp(S): 34.5 lb water evaporated/hr = 9,809.5 W — for steam boilers
Torque vs Horsepower
Torque = rotational force — what gets you moving from a stop, climbing hills
Horsepower = rate of doing work — determines top speed and sustained performance

Note: Torque and HP are always equal at exactly 5,252 RPM (in mechanical HP & ft-lb)
