Tips to Improve Mileage
Why Monitor Your Mileage?
A sudden drop in mileage is often the first sign of a mechanical problem — poor alignment, low tyre pressure, clogged air filter, worn clutch, or a faulty O2 sensor. Monitoring mileage regularly lets you catch issues early before they become expensive repairs.
Common Causes of Poor Mileage
Low Tyre Pressure: Under-inflation increases rolling resistance — each 1 PSI drop reduces mileage ~0.3%
Poor Wheel Alignment: Wheels fighting each other wastes fuel — check alignment annually
Clogged Air Filter: Reduces airflow, forcing a richer fuel mixture — check every 15,000 km
Worn Clutch: Slipping clutch means the engine revs more for less movement
Faulty O2 Sensor: Incorrect fuel-air ratio — engine burns rich to compensate
Aggressive Driving: Hard braking and acceleration can reduce mileage 15–40%
Air Conditioning: AC can reduce mileage by 10–25%, especially at low speeds
Excess Weight: Every 100 kg extra reduces mileage ~1–2%
How to Improve Mileage
1. Maintain correct tyre pressure — check monthly
2. Drive at steady speeds — use cruise control on highways
3. Avoid idling — turn off engine if stopped over 60 seconds
4. Use recommended engine oil — lower viscosity = less friction
5. Service regularly — clean air filter, spark plugs, fuel injectors
6. Coast to stops — lift off early, let momentum carry you
7. Reduce AC use — at low speeds, windows open is more efficient
8. Remove roof racks when not in use — aerodynamic drag costs fuel
9. Drive at optimal speed — typically 60–80 km/h (37–50 mph) for most cars
10. Check alignment and balance — annually or after hitting potholes
Tankful-to-Tankful Method (Most Accurate)
1. Fill tank completely — note odometer reading A
2. Drive normally until fuel is low
3. Fill tank completely again — note odometer reading B and litres added
4. Mileage = (B - A) ÷ Litres added

This eliminates errors from partial fills and gives true real-world mileage.
